I don’t usually share much of my thoughts about politics but perhaps like me you’ve been a little surprised by some reactions to the EU referendum result. Over the last few days I’ve scrolled through my social media feeds quite amazed by how many people have written the future off in despair & fear.
So for what it is worth here are a couple of my thoughts & why I am choosing to hope for the best;
1. As you probably know, Cameron standing down has created a leadership race, but many are speculating it to spark an early general election. Que politicians from all parties trying to discredit each other and spouting lots of rubbish we probably would be best taking with a pinch of salt. Their agenda is to cause us to distrust all the other politicians in the hope we might trust them. The political jockeying we have all grown weary of over the last few moths is far from over.
2. The media love an outspoken controversial figure to inflame public interest. So they find the most obnoxious people from either viewpoint to spout their racist & introverted rhetorics or grim faced insults in their interviews because we the public getting all upset is good for ratings & sales. Despite this giving the impression these are the views of everyone from either side of the vote, it’s probably not a fair representation of the general British public. Your next door neighbour or best friend who voted to leave has not had a personality transplant.
3. Believe it or not whilst many politicians say a lot of rubbish & despite the way our political parties jostle for influence, it’s all part of the political game & deep down at the root of it all most do desperately want our country to be successful and prosper. So I am choosing to trust that they will do their best to achieve that.
So rather than swallowing the media’s profiteering bias and fueling division and despair let’s choose hope and set about the task of rebuilding a nation as we would like it to be. And long may our communities come alive as we choose hope over fear.
